MISSION: "Start Early, Build Strong"

As one of the first programs of its kind in the State, the "Early Childhood Career Builders Pilot Project", introduced age appropriate curriculum materials and methods of teaching work ethics, literacy, language, pre-writing skills, math, science, and problem solving to children and their teachers through local child care facilities. Unit themes included transportation, contruction and engineering, health care, industry safety, and manufacturing. The child care facilities that qualified to participate in the Pilot Project were facilities that held a monitoring plan of two or better with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services / Child Care Licensing Division and Licensed Day Care Centers that provide care to subsidized children through Catholic Charities Child Care Contracting Services.

Part of the project's overall reach was to upgrade teacher education and professional development. The "Leaping for Literacy" Early Childhood Conference was held October 20, 2007. The Early Childhood Conference offered nine unique sessions for day care workers, faith-based organizations, Head Start programs and other educational groups to learn new teaching techniques, share ideas, and gain insight into creating exciting and engaging learning environments for young children. Individual sessions at the conference were facilitated by Lamar University-Beaumont Early Childhood Development Center, Lamar State College Port Arthur Early Childhood Center, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Child Care Licensing Division, Green Frog Day Care and Kidz World Day Care.

In addition to the conference, a children's concert was held on October 19, 2007, and was presented by Joe Scruggs at the Julie Rogers' Theatre. The concert touched on ways to develop a life-long love of both music and literature in young children.
